How to Cancel Planet Fitness (In Person or by Certified Mail)

Planet Fitness keeps cancellation deliberately offline. There is no cancel button in your account, no phone line that will process it, and no email that counts. The only two methods that actually end your membership are an in-person visit to your home club or a certified letter to it — and timing both around the annual fee is what saves you money.

Why you cannot cancel Planet Fitness online

Unlike a streaming service, Planet Fitness does not offer a self-serve cancel button anywhere — not on the website, not in the app, not over the phone. This is intentional friction. The two methods below are the only ones the company recognizes, so anything else (emailing, just cancelling your card, or stopping the app) will not stop the billing and can leave you owing back dues.

Option 1: Cancel in person (home club only)

The fastest route is to go to the Planet Fitness location where you signed up — your home club. It is the only club that can process your cancellation in person; another branch cannot do it for you, even on a Black Card.

1. Bring a photo ID and, if you have it, your membership ID number.
2. Ask the front desk for a cancellation form.
3. Fill it out and keep a copy or a photo of the completed form as your proof.

Option 2: Cancel by certified mail

If you cannot get to your home club — you moved, or it is far away — mail a cancellation letter to that club.

1. Write a short, dated letter that includes your full name, mailing address, phone number, email, and membership ID number, plus a clear statement that you are cancelling your membership.
2. Sign it.
3. Send it to your home club via USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. It costs a few dollars and gives you proof of both mailing and delivery.

Keep the certified-mail receipt and the return receipt — that paper trail is your evidence if Planet Fitness keeps billing you.

Knowing the fee structure helps you time your exit so you are not paying for a month or an annual fee you will not use:

Two dates matter: your monthly billing date and your annual fee date. Because Planet Fitness does not prorate, cancelling just after a monthly charge means you have already paid for that month — there is no refund, so you may as well use it. The bigger one is the annual fee: get your cancellation in before the cutoff (around the 25th of the prior month) and you avoid a full year's fee for a membership you are leaving.
