Is Proton Drive Enough to Replace Your Cloud Storage in 2026? Sharing and Multi-Device, Tested

Collaboration: does Proton Drive have a Google Docs equivalent?
It does now, and it is worth knowing about even if you already read our other Proton Drive coverage, because Docs is a newer part of the product than the encryption story those pieces focus on. Docs in Proton Drive is a real-time collaborative editor: multiple people can work in the same document at once, changes appear instantly with color-coded edits, and live cursors plus presence indicators show who else is in the file — the same interaction model as Google Docs, but end-to-end encrypted. Proton added Sheets alongside it, so basic spreadsheet collaboration is covered too.
Format compatibility is better than the "encrypted, so probably closed" assumption suggests. You can open a .docx file directly in Docs for real-time editing, and export a Proton-native document back out as .docx, .html, .txt, or .md — some users report formatting drift on .docx export, which is worth testing on a real document before you commit a workflow to it.
Where the gap actually is: ecosystem depth, not the core feature. Google Docs and Microsoft 365 have a decade of third-party add-ons, plugin integrations, and Office-format round-tripping that Proton Docs does not match yet. Collaboration inside Proton — sharing a Doc or Sheet with another Proton user, or via a link — works well. Collaboration across ecosystems, with a mix of Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 users expecting native commenting threads, suggested edits, and version branching, is where a heavy collaborative team will still feel the difference.

This is the dimension where Proton Drive is not just adequate — it is ahead of the mainstream clouds, and it is the strongest reason this guide's "enough to replace" answer leans yes.
Shareable links are generated locally in your browser rather than on Proton's servers, and every link supports password protection, an expiration date, and one-click revoke. Folder sharing goes further, with Viewer and Editor permission levels on folders (a separate Commenter role exists inside Docs) rather than an all-or-nothing invite, and paid plans layer version history on top so a bad edit or an over-eager collaborator is always recoverable.

That configurable retention window is a genuinely useful control most mainstream clouds do not expose in the same way — you decide how far back "undo" reaches, rather than the provider deciding for you.
Password-protected, expiring, one-click-revocable links are table stakes on Proton Drive. They are still an upsell or a missing feature on most of the mainstream clouds.

Multi-device: solid, with one real gap
Proton Drive covers the devices most people actually use: Web, Windows 10/11, macOS, Android, and iOS/iPadOS, with selective sync on desktop so you are not forced to mirror your entire Drive locally. Mobile apps support offline access to files you have marked for it, which matters if you are editing documents on a plane or in a spotty-signal commute.
The gap is Linux. As of July 2026 there is still no native Linux desktop GUI — Proton shipped a command-line client for Linux (alongside Windows and macOS) in June 2026, and the web app works fine in any Linux browser for uploads, downloads, and sharing, but there is no graphical sync client yet. Proton has said a full-featured Linux desktop client with sync is "on its way," built on the same Drive SDK that powers its other clients, but has published no target date. If a native, always-syncing Linux desktop client is non-negotiable for your workflow today, that is the one platform where Proton Drive is not yet "enough."
The other honest multi-device limitation, covered in more depth in our full review, is sync mechanics rather than platform coverage: editing a file triggers a whole-file re-upload rather than a block-level delta sync, so large, frequently-edited files feel slower to sync than on Google Drive or iCloud.
Photos: automatic backup, real albums, no computer vision
Photo backup on Proton Drive is automatic and end-to-end encrypted on both iOS and Android now — a genuine improvement since photo backup started on Android before reaching iPhone. Photos land in a dedicated Photos tab, organized by date and grouped by month, and Proton has added encrypted Albums so you can group and share photo collections with the same password-and-expiry link controls as any other shared item.
Here is the honest gap, and it is the second reason this guide does not answer a flat "yes" to "enough to replace." Proton Drive has no face recognition, no computer-vision search, no "Memories"-style auto-generated highlights, and no map view for your photo library. That is not an oversight — Proton's whole model is that it cannot see the contents of your files, so it structurally cannot run the machine-learning models that power Google Photos' "find every photo of your dog" search or iCloud Photos' Memories. If those features are why you use your current photo library, that is a real workflow loss, not a minor one — and no amount of encryption enthusiasm changes it.

Who this is — and isn't — enough for
It is enough if your day-to-day is sharing documents and folders with a handful of people, co-editing the occasional Doc or Sheet, and syncing files across a normal device mix of Windows or Mac plus Android or iPhone. On those jobs, Proton Drive's sharing controls are better than what you are likely replacing, and Docs closes the collaboration gap that used to be its biggest weakness.
It is not quite enough if you run a native Linux desktop and need an always-syncing GUI client today, rather than a web app and a CLI. It is also not quite enough if a chunk of your value from Google Photos or iCloud Photos is AI-powered search and auto-curated memories — Proton's privacy model rules those features out by design, not as a temporary gap.
