Password Manager and Cloud Storage Renewal Pricing in 2026: Only Proton Pass Is Actually Flat

Why this test matters beyond VPNs

A password manager or a cloud-storage plan is, like a VPN, a subscription people tend to keep for years — you do not switch password vaults on a whim, and moving terabytes of files is even more friction. That means the renewal price, not the intro price, is what most of your total spend is actually priced at. The intro-to-renewal multiple we used to sort VPNs — how many times higher the second term is than the first — works the same way here: Proton Pass sits at 1.0x, Proton Drive at roughly 1.33x, Proton VPN at 1.8x-2.3x depending on the term, and NordPass at roughly 1.9x-2.5x depending on the promo you catch — at the steep end, NordPass's own jump actually exceeds Proton VPN's.

The one flat price: Proton Pass

Proton Pass Plus is the only genuinely flat price in this guide. As of July 2026 it runs about $2.99/month on annual billing, and that is a standard list price — it renews at that same $2.99/month, an intro-to-renewal multiple of 1.0x. There is no multi-year commitment required to get that rate, and no second-term step-up to budget for.

Not flat after all: Proton Drive

Proton Drive Plus (200GB), unlike Pass, is not flat. Its annual plan is priced at $35.92 for the first 12 months — about $2.99/month, a 40% intro discount — and renews at $47.88/year, about $3.99/month (consistent with the $2.99 → $3.99 progression already reported in our subscription-stacking guide). That is a real step-up: an intro-to-renewal multiple of roughly 1.33x — the gentlest of every intro-then-renew product in this guide, but a step-up all the same. A monthly Drive Plus plan, with no multi-year commitment, runs $4.99/month flat. A Proton Unlimited bundle (500GB plus Mail, Calendar, and VPN) runs about $9.99/month if you want more than Drive alone.

The intro trap: NordPass

NordPass runs the steepest intro-then-renew structure of the three password managers and cloud-storage products in this guide, and it is dynamic rather than fixed: two-year Premium terms have recently shown between $1.19 and $1.59 per month, and one-year terms between $1.59 and $1.99 per month, depending on session, region, and promotion (captured July 2026). The pricing page itself does not show what you pay at renewal.

Checkout does, though. Both the one-year and two-year Premium terms disclose, before you pay: "The renewal price is $35.88/year, CT may apply..." — that is $2.99/month, an intro-to-renewal multiple of roughly 1.9x-2.5x from the two-year intro range ($2.99 ÷ $1.19 = 2.51x at the cheapest observed rate, $2.99 ÷ $1.59 = 1.88x at the least steep), depending on the promo you catch. NordPass's Subscription Terms of Service (updated February 2026) back this up in writing: you will be charged "the renewal price valid at the time of your renewal," and displayed prices "are subject to change." The honest framing is not that NordPass hides the number — it is that the number lives at checkout, not on the page that sells you the intro rate.

Contrast: how this compares with Proton VPN and NordVPN

Proton VPN is not as flat as Proton Pass. Its multi-year intro rates — about $2.99/month on a two-year term and $3.99/month on a one-year term — both renew to roughly $6.99/month: about 2.3x from the two-year rate, 1.8x from the one-year. That is steeper than Proton Drive's 1.33x step, though still the gentlest renewal jump among mainstream VPNs.

NordVPN is the mirror image of NordPass on disclosure, not just on price. Its Basic tier starts around $3.49/month on a two-year intro term, and unlike NordPass, NordVPN publishes the renewal figure directly on its own pricing page, spelling out that the plan renews at the higher rate once the intro term ends — not only at checkout — where it shows $139.08/year (about $11.59/month) for Basic and $219.48/year (about $18.29/month) for Complete. NordVPN's ultimate renewal is steeper in dollar terms than NordPass's, but NordVPN is the more transparent of the two about where you can find the number before you buy.

Read the chart carefully: every bar here is a real renewal figure, not an estimate — Proton Pass and Proton Drive's from official list pricing, NordPass's from its own checkout disclosure, and both VPNs' from their pricing pages and checkout. The gap between Proton Pass's flat bar and Proton Drive's own slightly taller one shows that even one company's flat-pricing discipline does not automatically extend to every product it sells — check each subscription on its own.

The takeaway: check the number, and where it lives

If price stability is what you are optimizing for across your privacy stack, Proton Pass is the one product in this guide that passes the test with a flat renewal. Proton Drive and NordPass are not bad products — the point is to know the real second-term number, and where to find it, before a multi-year term locks you in.
