Paramount+ Prime Channel vs Direct: Which Should You Pick?
We compare adding Paramount+ as a Prime Video Channel against subscribing directly — on price, plans, ads, billing, and cancellation.

If you want to watch Paramount+ and you already shop on Amazon, you've probably noticed you can bolt it onto Prime Video as a "Channel." The question is whether that's actually better than just subscribing on Paramount's own site. Short answer: the price is identical, so this comes down to convenience versus control — not dollars.
Is the Paramount+ Prime Channel cheaper than subscribing directly?
No. This is the part Amazon's interface tends to gloss over: the Prime Video Channel charges the same monthly rate as Paramount+ does on its own site. As of June 2026 that's about $8.99/month for the ad-supported Essential plan and about $13.99/month for the ad-free Premium plan with Showtime — the exact prices you'd pay direct.
There's no built-in discount for routing the subscription through Amazon. The only time the channel comes out ahead on price is during a limited promo (Amazon has run "two months for 99 cents" style deals around Prime Day), and those promos are also frequently matched by Paramount's own site. So if you're choosing the channel purely to save money, you're not.
One real cost difference worth naming: the Prime Video Channel is layered on top of a Prime membership, which runs about $14.99/month or $139/year (as of June 2026). If you don't already pay for Prime, the channel route is strictly more expensive than going direct.
How much does Paramount+ cost each way?
The underlying plans and prices are the same whether you subscribe direct or through Prime. Here's how the two routes line up.
| Plan / route | Monthly | Annual | Ads | Showtime + live CBS | Best for | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Essential (direct) | ~$8.99/mo | ~$89.99/yr | Yes | No | Cheapest entry, casual viewers | | Premium w/ Showtime (direct) | ~$13.99/mo | ~$139.99/yr | Mostly ad-free | Yes | Showtime fans, live CBS, 4K | | Essential (Prime Channel) | ~$8.99/mo | n/a (monthly) | Yes | No | Prime members who want one bill | | Premium w/ Showtime (Prime Channel) | ~$13.99/mo | n/a (monthly) | Mostly ad-free | Yes | Prime members, premium content |
Note the annual option: subscribing directly lets you pay yearly (about $89.99 for Essential or $139.99 for Premium), which works out cheaper per month than paying monthly. Prime Video Channels bill monthly, so if you want the annual discount, you generally have to go direct.
What's the difference between watching through Prime vs the Paramount+ app?
The content is identical — same shows, same live sports, same Showtime library on the Premium tier, same ad load on whichever plan you pick. The channel doesn't strip out or add anything to the underlying tier.
What changes is the wrapper. Through Prime Video Channels, Paramount+ titles surface inside the Prime Video app and Amazon handles the billing, so everything lives under one Amazon login and one charge on your card. The tradeoff: you're using Amazon's player and library navigation rather than Paramount's native app, and some Paramount+ features (profile management, certain settings, the cleanest path to switching tiers or grabbing a promo) live on Paramount's own apps.
Subscribing directly gives you the full native Paramount+ experience across its own apps, the website, smart TVs, and consoles — plus the annual billing option and the most direct route to plan changes and deals.
Who should add Paramount+ through Prime — and who shouldn't?
Pros
- One Amazon login and one consolidated bill if you already live in Prime Video.
- Paramount+ titles appear alongside the rest of your Prime Video library.
- Same price as direct, so you lose nothing on cost by consolidating.
- Easy to start and stop month-to-month from your Amazon Channels list.
Cons
- Requires an active Prime membership (~$14.99/mo or $139/yr) — no Prime, no channel.
- No annual-billing discount; Prime Channels bill monthly only.
- You use Amazon's player and miss some native Paramount+ app features.
- Promos and tier changes are cleaner to access on Paramount's own site.
Add it through Prime if you already pay for Amazon Prime, you watch most of your streaming inside the Prime Video app anyway, and you'd rather have one fewer separate bill and login to track.
Subscribe directly if you don't have Prime, you want the annual price (about $89.99 or $139.99/year), you want the full native app, or you simply prefer to manage Paramount+ on its own.
