ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro: Which $20 AI Subscription Wins?
All three leading AI assistants cost about $20 a month — but they are not interchangeable. Here is how ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Google AI Pro differ on models, features, and who each is for.

For years the "which AI should I pay for?" question had a moving answer because one model would leap ahead, then another. As of June 2026 that race has largely flattened: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all genuinely good, and for everyday use the model is no longer the deciding factor. What separates them now is features, output feel, integrations, and usage limits — and those differ more than the $0.01 between their prices.
What do they cost, and what do you get?
At this tier the prices are close enough to ignore — the question is what each $20 buys.
| ChatGPT Plus | Claude Pro | Google AI Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | OpenAI | Anthropic | |
| Price | $20/month | $20/month | $19.99/month |
| Top models | GPT-5 series | Claude Opus & Sonnet (4-series) | Gemini 3 Pro |
| Biggest draw | Most features & widest ecosystem | Writing & coding quality | Built into Gmail/Docs + 2 TB storage |
| Notable extras | Image gen, Sora video, voice, custom GPTs, agent mode | Artifacts, Projects, web search, connectors | NotebookLM, Workspace integration, 2 TB Google One |
| Free tier | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Next tier up | Pro, $200/month | Max, $100–$200/month | AI Ultra, $99.99+/month |
One quiet tiebreaker: Google AI Pro's 2 TB of storage. If you already pay Google for storage, the AI is effectively bundled in, which can make it the cheapest of the three in practice.
Models and raw capability
All three operate at the frontier — OpenAI's GPT-5 series, Anthropic's Claude Opus and Sonnet, and Google's Gemini 3 Pro. On any given week one may edge ahead on a benchmark, but the gaps are small and they leapfrog each other with every release. For the large majority of real tasks — drafting, summarizing, analysis, everyday coding — you will not feel a capability ceiling on any of them. Choose on the things that change less often than the leaderboard.
Writing and everyday work
This is where preferences diverge. Claude has a reputation among many writers and editors for the most natural prose and the steadiest long-form reasoning, and it tends to follow detailed instructions closely. ChatGPT is the most flexible generalist and rarely the wrong answer for mixed tasks. Gemini has improved sharply and is strongest when your work already lives in Google Docs. None of this is settled science — writing quality is subjective and shifts with each model update — so the free tiers are the honest way to judge which voice fits yours.
Coding
ChatGPT and Claude are both excellent coding partners. Claude is especially popular with developers for code quality and its companion tools, while ChatGPT counters with its own agent and code features and the broadest plugin ecosystem. Gemini is a capable coder too, particularly if you work inside Google's developer stack. If code is your main use, this is a two-horse race between ChatGPT and Claude for most people — and worth testing on your own repository before committing.
Research and the web
All three now include a "deep research" mode that compiles multi-source reports, and all three can browse the live web. Gemini's tie-in with Google Search is a natural advantage for current-events lookups, while ChatGPT and Claude both cite sources as they browse. For serious research workflows, the differentiator is less the browsing and more how each one organizes and exports what it finds.
Ecosystem and integrations
This is the clearest split of the three:
- Google AI Pro is built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, plus NotebookLM and 2 TB of storage. If your day already happens in Google's apps, Gemini meets you there.
- ChatGPT Plus is the widest standalone toolkit: image generation, Sora video, voice mode, custom GPTs, and an agent that can take actions — the most "one app does everything" option.
- Claude Pro is leaner but deliberate, with Projects and Artifacts for structured work and connectors for pulling in your own tools and files.
Usage limits
At $20, the caps differ. ChatGPT Plus is generally the most generous on how many messages you can send before hitting a limit. Claude Pro's limits are tighter and reset on a rolling window, so heavy users tend to bump into them fastest — a real consideration if you work in long sessions. Google has moved its paid plans toward compute-based limits rather than fixed daily caps. If you are an all-day power user, this difference can matter more than any benchmark, and it is the detail most worth checking against each provider's current terms before you commit.
Which should you pick?
Pros
- ChatGPT Plus: the most well-rounded — image, Sora video, voice, custom GPTs, and an agent in one subscription.
- Claude Pro: widely rated best for writing and coding, with Artifacts and Projects for structured work.
- Google AI Pro: bundles 2 TB of storage and builds Gemini right into Gmail, Docs, and Sheets.
- All three: the same ~$20 price and a usable free tier to test before paying.
Cons
- ChatGPT Plus: the breadth can be overkill if you just want a chat assistant, and the top GPT-5 Pro model is gated to the $200 tier.
- Claude Pro: tighter usage limits at $20 than ChatGPT Plus, and no built-in image or video generation.
- Google AI Pro: Gemini's chat output still trails the other two for some writing and coding, and the value case depends on using Google's apps.
- All three: model quality changes monthly — today's leader may not be next quarter's.
Pick ChatGPT Plus if you want one assistant that does the most out of the box — generating images and video, talking to you, building custom GPTs, and taking actions — and you value generous limits.
Pick Claude Pro if your main use is writing or coding and you care most about output quality and structured tools (Projects, Artifacts), and you can live within tighter message limits.
Pick Google AI Pro if you already work in Gmail and Docs or pay for storage — the 2 TB and native Workspace integration make it the best-value option for Google-centric users.
